High-Risk Pregnancy
Closer follow-up when a pregnancy needs extra watching
Some pregnancies need more than the routine schedule: diabetes, high blood pressure, twins, a previous caesarean section, a previous pregnancy loss or preterm birth, or a condition you already live with. Being called high-risk describes the extra attention that is needed, and does not mean that something will go wrong. The plan is built around your particular situation, with more frequent visits, extra tests and scans where they are useful, and a clear, agreed plan for where and how you will deliver. Anything that needs hospital-level care is arranged early rather than at the last minute.
- A plan built around your own situation rather than a template
- Closer follow-up with extra tests and scans where they help
- A delivery plan agreed well in advance
- Early referral to hospital-level care if it is needed

Common questions
- Does high-risk mean something is wrong with my baby?
- No. It means the pregnancy needs more watching than usual. Many women with a high-risk pregnancy go on to have a straightforward birth with the right follow-up.
- Will I have to deliver in hospital?
- In most high-risk situations, yes, and the plan will say where. That decision is made with you early, not announced in labour.
- What should make me call or go in sooner?
- Bleeding, severe abdominal pain, a severe headache with blurred vision, sudden swelling of the face or hands, fluid leaking, or your baby moving much less than usual. Go to a hospital emergency department for any of these.
