Fertility & Preconception
Planning a pregnancy, or when it is taking longer than expected
Preconception care is a visit before you try: reviewing your health, your medicines, your vaccination status and anything in your history that is worth knowing beforehand. If you have been trying for some time without success, the first-line assessment looks at the common and treatable causes for both of you, including your cycle, ovulation and basic tests. You will be told honestly where things stand and what the sensible next steps are, including when a referral to a specialist fertility service is appropriate. Nothing here promises a pregnancy, and you will not be sold treatment you do not need.

Common questions
- How long should we try before seeking help?
- Commonly after a year of regular attempts, or sooner if you are over 35, have irregular periods, or have a known condition. Come earlier if you are worried.
- Does my partner need to be tested too?
- Often yes, because a cause can lie with either partner. A simple first test is usually the easiest and quickest place to start.
- Can I be guaranteed to conceive?
- No honest clinic can promise that. What we can do is look for treatable causes, explain your realistic options and refer you on when that is the right step.
